Today we're going to taking a look at a clevis hook with a safety latch. This clevis hook attaches to a chain, and allows you to easily connect the chain to whatever it is that you need to connect to. It's going to feature a spring loaded safety latch mechanism, that keeps the unit from accidentally disconnecting. It's made from a forged steel construction, with a protective finish to keep it safe from rusting and corrosion. It's going to offer a working load limit of 5,400 pounds. This is a 3/8 inch hook, 3/8 inch is stamped right there. It's also a grade 43 hook.
That's stamped on there as well. The pin that connects through the chain, that's going to give us a diameter measurement of around 7/16 of an inch. Now, the thickness of the hook changes depending on the are. The tabs down here, when you measure the thickness of those, that's going to measure pretty close to 7/16 of an inch, 3/8 of an inch, right in that area. But you'll notice that it's a little bit more flat right here, and then at the tip, you know, it's a lot more narrow.
At the thickest point, which will be right here, so inside edge to outside edge, that thickness measures about 1 3/16 of an inch. Then the tip is going to be around 5/16 to 3/8 of an inch thick. When it comes to the opening that we have with that mechanism pulled back, we're looking at about 15/16 of an inch. The pin opening, so from tab to tab, that opening measures around 9/16 of an inch, and then you're going to have about 5/8 of space above the pin. It's a really nice design. Again, strong, durable construction.
It's made from that nice heavy duty forged steel with a protective finish to keep it safe from the elements. That's going to do it for today's look at clevis hook with the safety latch.

This product is exactly what I was told it would be. I will be using it in conjunction with a safety cable connecting the trailer to the boat along with the winch. Thanks for the awesome customer service! So knowledgeable.
The pin in the hook cannot be removed: a clip in the pin is not detachable. That means that a tow rope with a loop in its end cannot be attached to this hook. I will have to replace the clip in the end of the pin with something else (thinking a long thin bolt) so that I can remove the pin when I need to attach the tow rope to the hook.
I bought these hooks because they have a safety clip. They are replacing the old ones on the safety chains on my trailer that are to small.
